La relevancia de la obra de este personaje es difícil de exagerar, y si bien no hay un único acontecimiento en el desarrollo de la ciencia y el conocimiento de occidente que en verdad sea la clave fundamental que marque el comienzo de una modernidad, desde el punto de vista editorial las obras de este jesuita alemán del siglo XVII sin duda pueden entenderse como determinantes para el tránsito entre lo que sería la ciencia antigua y la que por el contrario se centra en un racional y ponderado método de análisis. En todo caso, Kircher y su tan conocida obra (entre otras cosas es tan conocida precisamente por sus tan interesantes y relevantes ilustraciones) Ars magna lucis et umbrae es referente obligado en el entendimiento del desarrollo de la historia de la óptica y del conocimiento del comportamiento general de la luz.

The relevance of Kircher’s work is hard to overstate, and even when there is no one sole occurrence in the development of science and western knowledge that is truly the key that marks the beginning of modernity, from the publishing stand point the works of this German Jesuit can be understood as determinant in the transit between what would be ancient-science and the science that in contrast is centered and based on rational and contrasted analysis. Be it as it may, Kircher, and his so well known (amongst other reasons for the so very interesting illustrations it contains) book Ars magna lucis et umbrae, is an important referent for the understanding of the general development of optics and the knowledge of the behavior of light itself.

Johann Zahn (1641-1707) Oculus Artificialis Teledioptricus Sive Telescopium

La obra de 1685 de Johann Zahn Oculus Artificialis Teledioptricus Sive Telescopium fue fundamental en su época y en ella se desarrolla y formula lo que en buena medida es la cámara oscura moderna como instrumento real. En esta obra confluyen - casi por primera vez en la historia de la óptica - de forma razonada y experimental el fenómeno de la cámara oscura propiamente y la lente moderna (de cuya fabricación habla extensamente la obra), combinación que posibilita un instrumento - de proyectión o de ayuda al dibujo - realmente moderno y útil y que marca el comienzo real del uso de la cámara oscura como tal en sus dos variantes o líneas evolutivas:

- primero como herramienta de proyección que se consuma en el fenómeno del espectáculo de linterna mágica, pasando ésta por la forma derivada de la fantasmagoría y mucho después en el cine

- segundo como herramienta para la ayuda al dibujo y el levantamiento de vistas, herramienta que luego será aplicada para su derivación como cámara fotográfica

Johann Zahn's Oculus Artificialis Teledioptricus Sive Telescopium of 1685 was of great relevance in its day, it explores in full the modern camera obscura as a real instrument. For almost the very first time in the history of optics the lens (and how to make them)  and the camera are brought together in a reasoned and experimental way, a combination that allowed for an instrument - first as a projection tool and a drawing aid later - that is truly modern an useful, and in any cases marks the beginning of the real evolution of the camera obscura in both of its variations or lines of tecnical evolution:

- first as a projection tool that leads to the development of the Magic Lantern, passing through the form of the Phantasmagoria, and then to the cinematographic projector

- and second as an tool for the aid in making drawings, a tool that would later derive into the photographic camera.
